Born to a Syrian father and a Lebanese mother, Nahhas graduated from The American University of Beirut with degrees in
Biology and Marine Sciences. He completed his PhD at Hull University, England. He worked for about twenty-five years in
environmental sciences, researching, lecturing, leading and consulting in Lebanon, Syria, England and Australia.
He co-operated with the United Nations’ programmes for the protection of the Mediterranean.
Nahhas has been interested in literature since school days. He founded and edited Kalimat, the English-Arabic quarterly magazine,
in 2000 and it continued till 2006. (The 'MAGAZINE' page here provides files for the 24 issues.)
Nahhas has many literary translations in English and Arabic, including seven collections of poetry and two books of prose.
In 2013 he published a collection of his own writings in Arabic covering a period from the seventies to the early two-thousands.
This was followed by two more prose collections in Arabic and two bilingual poetry collections (English and Arabic).
A selection of his poetry in Arabic was published in Beirut in 2023. And a prose selection in Arabic was published in Beirut in 2024.
Nahhas was only 12 when his interest in photography was noticed by his uncle Hani who offered him his camera.
When he was 14, Raghid wrote on the title page of one of his albums:
'SEE ME NOT IN MY PHOTOS, BUT IN THE PHOTOS I TAKE'.
Nahhas migrated to Australia with his family in 1988. He lives in Sydney.
